An elderly woman allegedly decapitated her husband during an argument over breakfast.
Margaret Wanjiru, 65, is accused of killing 99-year-old Ndung’u Mugachia around 7.30am on Sunday 5 September, in the village of Kagumo-ini in southern Kenya.
According to the police, he started arguing with his daughter-in-law, who had offered Mr. Mugachia breakfast.
Catherine Ringera, a police officer in the nearby town of Kandara, said: “Her husband went out to defend his daughter-in-law and that’s when all hell broke loose.”
Wanjiru then ran for a machete before cutting off her husband’s right ear before slitting his throat, reports the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation.
Her daughter-in-law, Betty Mumbi, said: “She woke up and started insulting her husband and included me because I was serving him breakfast.
“Her husband tried to calm her down, but it was in vain, as she rushed over to the panga and slit his throat.
“I tried to save him, but he also started attacking me.
He added: “He was lying outside the house trying to escape, but she overpowered him and cut off his head.”
Betty claimed that Wanjiru had previously threatened to kill her father, allegedly assaulting him earlier this year.
Mr. Mugachia was already dead when the police arrived on the scene.
Wanjiru is being held at the Kabati Police Station and is expected to appear in court.
Mr. Mugachia’s body is being held in the morgue of the Gaichanjiru Catholic Mission Hospital, with an autopsy expected to be performed.
The couple have been married for 52 years and have six children.
