Against the backdrop of mass popular protests in Venezuela, mercenaries from Wagner’s Russian PMC arrived in the country. Of course, their main job is to promote Maduro to keep power.
Reuters reports citing three sources.
A source close to Wagner’s PMC said the first group of Russian mercenaries arrived in Venezuela ahead of the May 2018 presidential election and the new group only recently arrived.
The news agency notes that Evgeniy Shabayev – a leader of the local department of the militant “Cossack group” – with links to Russian military contractors said he heard that the number of Russian contractors in Venezuela could be around 400 people.
At the same time, other Reuters sources say there are small groups of Russian mercenaries in the country.
The Russian Defense Ministry and the Venezuelan Ministry of Information did not respond to requests for comments on contractors. At the same time, Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said: “We don’t have such information.”
