USWNT’s Christen Press Will Take Time To Focus On “Mental Health, Spiritual Growth”
United States women’s national team forward Christen Press announced plans to take a break from football, citing a desire to focus on her mental health, spiritual growth and pain processing.
Press, who left Manchester United in June and subsequently signed for Angel City FC, was not included in the USWNT squad for the two matches against Paraguay later this month, the first of which is live on ESPN2 at 7:30 pm on September 16th.
“I’ve been a professional player for 10 years,” Press said on Instagram. “And I am very proud that I was available for almost every professional match for both the club and the country. Still, this came with a focus, intensity and priority that left little room for much more.
“I made the difficult decision to take some time away from the game to focus on my mental health, spiritual growth and pain processing. I’m sorry to miss the next few games and to see all our wonderful fans. I think I’ll come back stronger than ever. Thank you for all your support on my journey. “
Press, 32, made his USWNT debut in 2013 and won the FIFA Women’s World Cup on two occasions, in 2015 and 2019. He made 155 appearances for the team, scoring 64 goals.
