Ukraine is the largest country in Europe. Well, apart from Russia, but that country is not entirely in Europe. There seem to be few places left in the world to explore, but Ukraine offers travelers a veritable last frontier full of friendly people and off-map places you’ll never forget.
The country has a lot to offer, from the beautiful Carpathian Mountains to the bustling center of Kiev and Odessa’s beach parties. However, if you plan to travel extensively throughout Ukraine, you will want to find ways to save money on your trip. Thankfully, Ukraine has a plethora of affordable housing to choose from.
When looking for budget accommodation in Ukraine, you may not consider hotels. But there are actually many Ukrainian hotels at affordable prices. You will find many hotels in places like Kiev, Lviv and Odessa which maintain the same high standards as the best hotels in Europe, but which are much cheaper.
Sleeping under a tarp outdoors is always a good, affordable option. In Ukraine, most of the campsites are located on the outskirts of cities. Most of the camping facilities are pretty basic, but some are much better equipped and have features like swimming pools.
Wild camping is also allowed in some rural mountainous areas, but check that camping isn’t limited to a particular area before you pitch your tent. You can usually light fires on Ukrainian campsites. And if it’s too cloudy to gaze at the stars, you can always play Fire Joker slot on your phone or other games that will suitably accompany an outdoor bonfire. If you want a little more comfort and are willing to spend a little more, some campsites, such as those in the beautiful Carpathians, have idyllic chalet-like log cabins available.
Often, the ideal accommodation for travelers on a budget are hostels. Thankfully, Ukraine has a growing number of hostels in places like Kiev, Uzhhorod, Odessa, Lviv and Chernivtsi. Most are managed by the Association of Youth Hostels of Ukraine and all offer good value for money. Most hostels include breakfast and self-catering to help you save a little more. Some of the best hostels in the country are DREAM Hostel in Kiev, Park Plus Hostel in Lviv, Yard Hostel & Coffee in Chernivtsi and Park Plus Hostel in Lviv.
If you are planning to stay in a Ukrainian city for a long stay, you will probably get better value for money by renting an apartment. Most cities have affordable short-term apartments, and with the ability to self cater, you can also save on meals. Several private companies advertise short-term self-catering apartments in all major cities. Just make sure you inspect an apartment before you hand over your money.
In recent times, rural agritourisms have become much more widely available in Ukraine. In particular, you will find a lot in the Western Carpathians. This arrangement involves staying at someone’s home in a rural area. Most offer breakfast and all offer the opportunity to explore Ukrainian nature up close.
You can also meet Ukrainians living in the countryside in real life, which not all travelers can experience. However, you may need to brush up on your language skills, as most hosts only speak Ukrainian. Staying in a rural farmhouse is a truly unique experience that you will never forget.
Families are also available in cities, but you will usually need to ask locals for advice as there is no responsible organization for families. Alternatively, look for ads in the windows that show the word “komnati”, which means “rooms”.
