The 78th edition of the Golden Globe Awards is going bicostal. Hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who return to direct the ceremony for the first time since 2015, will not be in the same room together: Fey will instead broadcast live from The Rainbow Room (atop Rockefeller Center) in New York City, while Poehler will host from the usual place of the Globes inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.
This is the first time that the Golden Globes have been broadcast from multiple locations in its 78-year history, but it is not the first time that an awards show has been held simultaneously in both New York and Los Angeles, as did the Oscar for several years in the mid-fifties. The decision to place Fey on the East Coast and Poehler on the West Coast comes when Hollywood Foreign Press Association, NBC and Globes producers Dick Clark Prods. continue to iron out plans for this year’s awards show and adjust to the reality of editing that telecast during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Details yet to be revealed: whether presenters and nominees will be invited to attend in person, remotely, or through a combination of both (which is what the Primetime Emmys did last September). Having two production bases on both coasts, this could allow for more opportunities to include talent working on the East Coast or in Europe who might not otherwise be able to travel to Los Angeles. He also allegedly allows Fey to remain at his New York base.
The ceremony will air live Sunday, February 28 at 5 p.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET on NBC, postponed nearly two months after normal due to the pandemic. Voting for the TV nominations was scheduled for January 12, while the nominations for cinema were scheduled for January 30. Final votes will be mailed to all HFPA members by Ernst & Young on February 10th and by 5:00 pm on February 25th. 23.
As previously announced, Satchel and Jackson Lee, sons of director and three-time Golden Globe nominee Spike Lee, and producer / philanthropist Tonya Lewis Lee, have been chosen to serve as ambassadors for the 2021 Golden Globe.
The news of this year’s bicostal Globes comes on the eve of the announcement of the nominations on Wednesday morning. Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Henson will announce the main category nominees for the 78th Golden Globe Awards Wednesday at 5:35 am PT / 8:35 am ET, live on NBC’s “Today” show. Dick Clark Prods. President Amy Thurlow and Barry Adelman, Executive Vice President of TV, are executive producers of the telecast. Ali Sar is president of the HFPA.
Ricky Gervais hosted the 77th edition of the Golden Globe Awards, which was one of the most watched network television broadcasts of the year, averaging 19.2 million viewers on January 5, 2020.
