Politic: Lawmakers say they are unaware of the deployment of US troops to Taiwan
Two national security committee lawmakers – one Democratic in the House, the other Republican in the Senate – said Thursday that they were unaware of a U.S. troop deployment in Taiwan, where forces are reportedly helping to train the army of the island nation.
Thanks from Representative Ami Bera (D-Calif.) And Senator Thom Tillis (RN.C.), made during POLITICO’s inaugural Defense Forum, came just hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that a US special operations unit and a contingent of Marines have been operating in Taiwan for at least a year.
Asked if he was informed by Pentagon officials about the presence of US troops, Bera said, “not particularly this deployment.”
