WHO says continent urgently needs more hits as eight countries report a 30% increase in cases in one week
African countries face a desperate battle against a third wave of Covid infections as the supply of vaccines to the continent “stops”, top health officials have warned. “The threat of a third wave in Africa is real and growing.
Our priority is clear: it is crucial to quickly bring vaccines into the arms of Africans at high risk of becoming seriously ill and dying from Covid-19, “said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Africa.
The WHO said the pandemic is now on the rise in 14 countries and in the past week alone, eight countries have seen a sharp rise of more than 30% of cases.
However, shipments of vaccines to African nations have almost stopped.
