The German diplomat says the time is right for Serbia-Kosovo talks

The German Foreign Minister calls for the resumption of negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo for the normalization of relations between former enemies of the war whose unresolved territorial dispute has blocked efforts to achieve stability in the Balkans

BELGRADE, Serbia – The German Foreign Minister on Friday called for the resumption of negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo on the normalization of relations between former enemies of the war whose unresolved territorial dispute has blocked efforts to achieve stability in the Balkans.

The problem between Serbia and its former Kosovo province dates back to the break-up of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, when ethnic Albanian separatists seeking Kosovo independence and Serbian forces engaged in a bloody war. Kosovo finally declared independence in 2008.

The US and most EU countries have recognized Kosovo as a country, but Serbia and its allies Russia and China have not.

The EU has told both Serbia and Kosovo that they must normalize bilateral relations in order to advance their applications to join the bloc.

Serbian President Vucic said on Friday that Belgrade was ready to “work hard” to achieve what he described as a “compromise solution” to the dispute. He said both Serbs and Albanians need peace to make progress.

“We do not recognize Kosovo, but we are ready to discuss the future of the entire region in a serious and responsible way,” he said.
