Presidency of the PDP: Ayu agrees to resign if the North produces a presidential candidate

Former Senate President Dr Iyorchia Ayu has emerged as a consensual candidate for the national presidency of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). The Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi zoning committee had split the location to the north prior to the October 30 opposition party convention. -31. Ayu, former Benue State Interior Minister, was chosen Thursday after a second northern caucus meeting at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. The three northern zones each presented one candidate for screening for a consensual candidate.

Ayu was chosen as the North Central candidate while former Katisna State Governor Ibrahim Shema and National Vice President of the PDP (North) Senator Suleiman NaIf emerged from the Northwest and Northeast respectively. Adamawa state governor Ahmadu Finitiri, who informed reporters at the end of the meeting, said other candidates have agreed to resign for Ayu.

He said: “There is no victory (and) there is no winner in this bout; we all came out united. “Among the three northern candidates produced by the three zones, the candidates themselves in the spirit of unity and solidarity, in the spirit of ensuring that the PDP emerges and benefits from our efforts, so that we can win together for a Nigerian general 2023 election , Senator Iyorchia Ayu has emerged as a consensus candidate for the North.

“Everyone is immensely qualified, but through discussions and reconciliations we have emerged with a consensus list that has been approved by the candidates themselves. There were no elections and there was no selection ”. Ayu will be introduced to the southern caucus which also met in Benin on Thursday. The Southern Caucus meeting should present the candidate to the National Secretariat and other offices assigned to them. Finitiri, who is chair of the northern 20-man screening committee, said the area will contact colleagues in the south to get support at the convention.

The New Telegraph learned that it was not easy to reach Ayu as a consensus candidate. A source at the meeting said he was asked to sign a pledge that his appearance will not preclude anyone in any of the three zones from contesting the 2023 presidency. Part of the deal is that if the emergence of a presidential candidate tip the scales in favor of any part of the North, resign and work for the candidate. Ayu in his acceptance speech promised to bring the PDP back to its winning ways, adding that after the convention they will work to “rebuild the party to take power to rebuild the country”. The former minister added: “We intend to work together with all leaders, not only in the North but across the country, to reposition this country for the next generation of Nigerians.”

He promised to run an all-encompassing administration while exposing the situation in the country. Ayu said: “We will work as a team. And I believe that with the support of Nigerians who have suffered at the hands of a party that doesn’t exist, a party that doesn’t care about the young, a party that doesn’t care about anyone but themselves, the victory we will achieve and administer in this country to the greater glory of God. “Today our currency is the weakest in the world. Somalis are also better than us in Africa ».
