“… Our great holy Church of Christ blesses and proclaims the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church”, this is proclaimed in the text of the tomos of autocephaly, signed yesterday by the ecumenical patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople.
Indeed, yesterday a historic event took place in Istanbul: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church regained its autocephaly. The schism in Ukrainian Orthodoxy, which has been talked about for years in Moscow, is over. From now on, together with Orthodox Christians from all over the world, we must spread the word of God.
It should not be forgotten that the Ukrainian Church, first of all, is Orthodox. This means that we, as Christians, must remember the death of the body and the salvation of the soul. The Lord will not ask you if you were glad you provided autocephaly, but he will remember every case in which you betrayed him, giving way to a sin.
Not autocephaly, but God’s Word should come first. Respect for this hierarchy will help us believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to follow the path of salvation.
On this day, on Christmas Eve, we rejoice and remember in our grateful prayers the Most Holy Patriarch Bartholomew I and the whole Ecumenical Patriarch. Rejoice with us today!
