Northern state lawmakers said the north deserves to hold the presidency in 2023 because the south ruled for 14 years while the north would rule for 10 years at the end of President Muhammadu Buhari’s term.
Lawmakers, who gathered in Abuja on the platform of a patronage for the 2023 presidential ambition of Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, nevertheless asked the governor to intensify his consultation for the top position.
The meeting was attended by four delegates each from 18 states in the northern part of the country.
The summoner of the meeting, the chairman of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole, invited attendees to support Bello’s 2023 presidential aspiration.
Kolawole spoke of the youthful energy and necessary kindred experience that Bello possessed, saying they are necessary for the development of Nigeria.
The lawmakers communiqué ruled as follows: “That every lawmaker should go home in order to support and consult with his constituents and stakeholders on Governor Yahaya Bello’s presidential aspiration;
“The meeting established that Governor Yahaya Bello is competent and indeed has a similar experience for the high office, the meeting therefore invited him to consult for longer across the country;
That the meeting reviewed the rotating presidency as recently advocated by the Southern Governors’ Forum;
“However, northern lawmakers believe the rotation of the presidency should be in favor of the northern part of the country.
“This is because since 1999 the southern part of the country has ruled the country for 14 years, while the north will be 10 years old at the end of President Buhari’s term in 2023”
“That a National Working Committee be established in order to have a broader consultation on Governor Yahaya Bello’s presidential aspiration across the country.
