Michael gets a home

Michael (not his real name) came to us from Texas via Louisiana, where he was born and raised.

He grew up on his father’s fishing boat but was moved after Hurricane Katrina and moved to drier climates and ended up working in oil fields in the Texas Panhandle.

After the recent oil drop, he found himself homeless again and headed to our beautiful city where he has been for the past few months, sleeping outside or in our emergency shelter.

Christina, our social worker was recently able to get him into a HUD accommodation and got a part-time job, so things are starting to improve for him once again.

He has also taken some of our financial management skills courses to help him manage his income better.

Last year, we accommodated about 15 people in HUD accommodation (5 of whom were veterans); the most recent person was Ivan, who with the assistance of funds from the Salvation Army was able to repay the outstanding rent and re-enter the HUD.

Our social worker is also dealing very closely with the HMS Linkages program which really seems to be on the ball and is able to place people pretty fast. But as with all government agencies, there is an application that takes about an hour and a half to fill out and those who apply really appreciate the little extra help Christy provides while helping them fill it out.

We are still looking for a building to use as a more permanent transitional shelter for men and would also like a small place to accommodate homeless families until we can arrange accommodation for them.

And once we find a place, we’ll need the funds to run it and hire full-time staff, but if it’s close enough to the Mission, we’ll be able to provide meals and clothing there.

Our main goal is to get homeless people to be housed as soon as possible and this is possible thanks to your support.

Thanks Silver City for helping those in need!
