Mercedes wins qualifying: Hamilton is the fastest, Bottas wins pole

Verstappen climbs the front row for Hamilton’s penalty

Mercedes won qualification for the Formula 1 Turkish GP all the way down, minimizing the penalty Lewis Hamilton will have to respect in this 16th World Championship race when he changed the combustion engine of the W12.

Hamilton was the fastest driver in Istanbul Park at the end of the standings with a new all-time Turkish track record set at 1’22.868 and beat his team-mate Vattei Bottas (who had been fastest in the first Q3 output) of 130 milliseconds.

As Mercedes wished, its drivers were both the fastest – and the only ones to race in “22 seconds” – and with Hamilton leading the standings to cushion the penalty as much as possible. In this way the World Cup leader will drop ten places, to 11th, on the starting grid, and the Finn will start from pole position this Sunday.

Alongside Bottas in the front row will be Max Verstappen (Red Bull) after the third time in qualifying and the second row will be occupied by Chatles Leclerc’s Ferrari and Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri, all climbing one position in the top 10 which will come out ahead of Hamilton, like Fernando Alonso (Alpine) or Sergio Pérez (Red Bull).

An exciting match is expected given Bottas’ ‘obligation’ to keep the lead over Verstappen for Hamilton to try to recover from 11th place through a respectable top 10, the other grid change in terms of qualification. is with Carlos Sainz.

The replacement of Ferrari in the hybrid system of the Spaniard’s car sends him to the last place on the grid despite the 15th time (doing timed laps only in Q1) which left him in the standings behind Mick Scumacher – who took Haas for the first time this season at Q2.
