This post discusses the main plot points of the Netflix series Shadow and bone.
Just like the books it is based on, the new fantasy series from Netflix Shadow and bone opens in a military encampment on the outskirts of Shadow Fold, a dangerous strip of pure darkness that splits Ravka’s fictional realm in two.
It is the eve of the first crossing of the void full of monsters Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an orphaned soldier, a journey that she will undertake together with her best friend, the orphaned colleague Malyen “Mal” Oretsev (Archie Renaux). The two expect the crossing to be dangerous, but they have no way of knowing that what happens to the Fold will awaken a long dormant power within Alina – the ability to summon and manipulate light – that will forever change the course of their lives.
Fans of author Leigh Bardugo’s best-selling Grishaverse novels will recognize this as its basic premise Shadow and bone trilogy, released starting in 2012. But the first season of the Netflix series, produced by Bardugo and showrunner Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird box), it also incorporates characters and plot points from Six of crows, the debut in a later duology set in the same world.
Named for the elite magical soldiers known as Grisha who populate Bardugo’s books, the Grishaverse currently embraces a trilogy, Shadow and bone, two duologies, Six of crows is King of scarsand a collection of short stories, The language of thorns. The second and final entry in King of scars duology, Wolves rule, was released on March 30.
Here’s how the Netflix series builds on both files Six of crows is Shadow and bone books for its eight-episode first season, which premieres on April 23.
How does Six of crows fit into Shadow and bone timeline?
While both files Six of crows is King of scars the books take place following the events of Shadow and bone trilogy, the Netflix series pushes some of the most popular Six of crows characters, including criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), spy acrobat Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman) and marksman Jesper Fahey (Kit Young), in Shadow and bone action. Instead of focusing solely on Alina, Mal and General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), known in the books as the Darkling, the show’s narrative changes back and forth between plots until they finally converge.
About 10 minutes into the first episode, viewers are transported to Ketterdam, a bustling port city on the island of Kerch, known for its dark underbelly of crime and corruption. It is there that we meet Kaz, the leader of a gang called The Crows (known in the books as Dregs), and his two most trusted accomplices, Inej and Jesper. It later comes to light that the scenes in Ketterdam take place two weeks after Alina was revealed as the Sun Summoner as she traversed the Fold.
In their very first scene together, we learn that Kaz is still in the process of paying Inej’s debt to the Seraglio, a brothel in which Inej was bound against her will after being kidnapped by slaveholders. Inej also informs Kaz that a wealthy merchant is looking for a crew to cross the Fold into East Ravka and bring something back – and offering a reward of one million kruge (Kerch currency) in return.
Meanwhile in West Ravka, as shown in the third episode, spy Grisha Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan) is captured by a unit of Drüskelle – elite soldiers from Fjerda, Ravka’s neighbor to the north, who hunt Grisha for trial. and execution – and finds herself locked up aboard a ship under the surveillance of Matthias Helvar (Calahan Skogman). In the books, Nina is captured by Drüskelle’s Matthias gang while on a mission to the Wandering Island with colleague Grisha Zoya Nazyalensky (played in the show by Sujaya Dasgupta).
With the exception of Kaz, Inej and Jesper’s mission through the Fold – which is not part of the books – the rest of these things have already happened over time. Six of crows it begins.
What role do files play Six of crows the characters play Shadow and bone?
Apparently, the objective that Kaz, Inej and Jesper are tasked with acquiring is none other than Summoner Alina Starkov, a mission that takes them through the Fold and to the Little Palace, the residence of Ravka’s Second Army. , i.e. the Grisha, in the Ravkan capital of Os Alta.
When the season ends, Alina is at the end in the same position she is in at the end of the first Shadow and bone book. But unlike the book, the Ravens cross paths with her along the way and also participate in the final battle against the Darkling on the Fold. It is a crossover that adds an appropriate backstory to the relationships between the principal characters of Six of crows.
The final episode of the season also brings Nina into the Raven fold after she accidentally sent Matthias to the infamous Hellgate prison in a failed attempt to keep him safe.
With all five on a ship bound for Ketterdam at the end of episode eight, the stage appears to be perfectly set for a second season following the main storyline of Six of crows: Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina and Matthias team up with yet-to-be-presented engineer Wylan to complete the heist of a life by saving a scientist imprisoned in the allegedly impenetrable Fjerda Ice Court. But until then, we’ll just have to wait and see.
No mourners, no funerals.
