GOP Representative Adam Kinzinger has launched a new political action committee to push back Republicans embracing former President Donald Trump.

“The Republican Party has lost its way. If we want to drive again, we have to find the courage to remember who we are, ”Kinzinger said in a video posted on the new Country First PAC website.

The PAC is meant to fund candidates who oppose Trump’s influence on the party.

“We have to remember what we believe in and why we believe it,” Kinzinger said. “Looking in the mirror can be difficult, but the time has come to choose what kind of party we will be and what kind of future we will fight to achieve.”

On January 6, Trump supporters breached the United States Capitol and clashed with law enforcement, disrupting a joint session of Congress as lawmakers had to certify President Joe Biden’s election victory. The attack resulted in the death of five people.

Trump was criticized for encouraging the crowd, and the House has since accused him of inciting insurgency. The Senate will hold a trial and vote on whether to sentence the former president during the week of February 8.

Kinzinger was one of 10 Republicans who voted for Trump’s impeachment. He told Insider’s Anthony Fisher that his family has since sent a petition to have him disowned.

The Illinois congressman also told Fisher he thought Trump should be impeached because: “We have to establish red lines. An attack on one branch of the government by another branch is a red line. We can’t say. that you are immune from any kind of impeachment if you are within a certain period of time after the end of the assignment. It is a terrible precedent. “

Kinzinger was critical of Minority House leader Kevin McCarthy’s visit Thursday to Trump’s Florida home and said the GOP is not a “Trump party.”

“The former president is desperate to continue looking like the party leader. And the problem is until we push back and say, you know, this isn’t a Trump first party, this is a country’s first party, “Kinzinger told Chuck Todd in an interview on Meet the press on Sunday.

“In some cases, you could support Donald Trump in this effort. But in my case, I think it’s a whole new movement, “Kinzinger said.” Until we all stand up and say it, in this situation we’re going to hunt here. “
