Four marks on your face that show that you are deficient in nutrients

The first thing to do is identify whether or not you have a vitamin B12 deficiency. According to Dr. Rajendran Kannan, his Research proposes that there are four telltale signs of the condition on your skin. These included skin hyperpigmentation, vitiligo, angular cheilitis, and hair changes.


The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology explained that hyperpigmentation is when “patches of skin become darker in color than the surrounding normal skin.”

“This happens because melanin absorbs energy from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays to protect the skin from overexposure,” explained the college of dermatology.


The NHS explained that Vitiligo is where “pale white spots develop on the skin.”

It is the opposite of hyperpigmentation as it is the lack of melanin that causes the white spots.

This condition commonly occurs on the face, neck, and hands, as well as in the folds of the skin.


Angular cheilitis

Angular cheilitis is a condition that causes “red, swollen patches in the corners of the mouth,” WebMD explained.

DermNet NZ added that angular cheilitis symptoms can include painful cracks, scabs, oozing, or bleeding.

Hair changes

Dr. Kannan’s research stated that “hair changes” are “associated with [a] vitamin B12 deficiency “.

However, hair changes – such as hyperpigmentation, vitiligo and angular cheilitis – “are not specific to [a] vitamin B12 deficiency alone “.

It is best to address an underlying vitamin B12 deficiency as soon as possible.

This is because some of the symptoms can become “irreversible if left untreated”.

Your doctor will decide if vitamin B12 supplements are the right treatment for you.

In severe cases of vitamin B12 deficiency, vitamin B12 injections may be needed in place of supplements.
