What is a Tostada?
A Tostada (pronounced tuh-staa-duh) is a flat, crunchy tortilla loaded with the best taco toppings. The word roast means “toasted”. It refers to the crispy tortilla that has been toasted or fried. The crispy tortilla is then stacked with your favorite toppings.
Tostadas are a popular dish in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. The name is used for any dish that uses toasted tortilla as a base. In Mexico, tostadas are often served with fresh protein or are also eaten as a snack or side dish to other dishes, such as pozole or soup (they are so delicious with chicken tortilla soup).
How to make Tostada shells
You can buy crunchy “tostadas” or make your own. Tostada shells can be prepared by baking or frying. We prefer to bake tortillas as a healthier option that still gets crunchy. It’s a very simple process:
- Grease the Tortillas – Spray the tortillas with cooking spray or lightly brush with oil.
- Cook the Tortillas – Place the tortillas on a baking sheet and bake at 415 ° F, turning halfway through and bake until crisp and golden.
How to assemble Tostadas
Making tostadas is quick and easy. Prepare the toppings in advance to make your process even easier. Follow these simple steps to make your tostadas:
- Cook the Tostada shells – See the simple instructions above for making the shells.
- Make the taco meat – Cook the minced meat in a pan, breaking it up with a spatula. Season the meat with garlic powder, taco seasoning, and salt to taste. Add the diced onion and continue cooking until the onion is soft and translucent and the meat is completely cooked.
- Prepare the toppings – Reheat the refried beans in a skillet on the stove or in the microwave. Prepare and chop the rest of the toppings on the tostada.
- To serve – Spread the top with heated refried beans, add ground beef and remaining toppings before serving.
Professional tip: Applying a layer of refried beans first will allow the other toppings to adhere to the tostada.
There are so many options for tostada stuffing! You can use both hot and cold ingredients. Our recipe includes some of our favorites, but you can use whatever you want or what you already have on hand. You can’t go wrong with:
- Iceberg lettuce
- Cheese – cotija or queso fresco
- Pico de Gallo
- Squeeze lime wedges on top
A tostada is made with a tortilla that has been cooked or deep-fried to a brown, crunchy and crunchy texture. It is similar to a tortilla chip, except that a tostada is the whole tortilla vs cut into triangles for chips.
A tostada is flat and served on a crispy tortilla shell, while tacos are folded using corn or flour tortillas. The toppings used are similar for both tacos and tostadas. A tostada is like an open-faced crispy taco.
Simply bite into a tostada like you would a pizza. Tostadas can get a little messy, so serve them on plates. Keep a fork nearby to catch falling toppings.
To make these vegetarian tostadas, you can skip the ground beef. You can also use Carne Asada or, if you prefer seafood, try making the juicy shrimp of these Shrimp Fajitas or the tilapia of these Fish Tacos.
Homemade tostadas are so easy to make. You can also prepare the ingredients in advance if you are serving them for a party and let the guests build their own Tostadas.
