Russian player Daniil Medvedev beat number one Novak Djokovic to win the US Open. The 25-year-old won his first major title on Sunday after beating Djokovic in three sets. Medvedev won the set six to four games and largely controlled the flow of the final.

Djokovic aimed to become only the third man to complete a grand slam – winning all four of the sport’s major tournaments in the same calendar year. Medvedev praised Djokovic after the match as he praised his skills and apologized to his fans for upsetting his attempt to make history.

“First of all, I want to apologize for you fans and Novak because I mean, we all know what he was doing today and I just want to say it,” said Medvedev, “I’ve never told anyone, but I say it right away: for me you are the greatest tennis player in history ”.

Daniil Medvedev’s extraordinary victory closes the incredible US Open 2021.
