As of Saturday, nearly 17,400 people have been hospitalized with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infections – more than double the previous peak reached in July – and a state model using current data to predict future trends shows that the number could reach an unfathomable 75,000 by mid-January.

More than 3,600 confirmed or suspected COVID-19 patients were in the intensive care unit.

Some areas of California were “just about to be invaded,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country’s foremost expert on infectious diseases, at an event organized by the California State University system.
