Francis was asked, on his way home from Slovakia, about the debate in the US church on whether to deny Communion to President Joe Biden and other politicians because of their positions on abortion. The US bishops have agreed to draft a “didactic document” that many of them hope will blame Catholic politicians, including Biden, for receiving Communion despite their support for the right to abortion.
Francis refused to give a “yes” or “no” answer, saying he did not know the US case well enough. He repeated that abortion is ‘murder’ and that Catholic priests cannot give the Eucharist to anyone who is not in communion with the church. You cited the case of a Jew, or someone who is not baptized or who has strayed from the church.
The most important thing, he said, is that priests and bishops must respond pastorally and not politically to any problem that presents itself to them. He said they must use “God’s style” to accompany the faithful with “closeness, compassion and tenderness”.
‘And what should shepherds do? Be shepherds and not condemned, condemned ‘, Francis said.
