Arsenal have five alternatives to Houssem Aouar’s transfer, including former Unai Emery target

Arsenal have signed Nuno Tavares and are hoping to add both Ben White and Albert Sambi Lokonga in the coming days and weeks as they step up their transfer activity – but they have yet to find a new long-term option in the No 10 role; another of their summer priorities.

Among the possible options for the position, Martin Odegaard returned to Real Madrid after his loan to the Emirates, while James Maddison is long-term linked to Leicester and free agent Hakan Calhanoglu has traded AC Milan for Inter Milan.

Lyon’s Houssem Aouar is another target with his reduced price tag due to financial hardship and the Gunners wanted him last summer, but Athletic say the interest of North Londoners has actually cooled.

According to their reports, the Arsenal boardroom has not reached a complete consensus on whether or not the Frenchman is the right person for the attack for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The Gunners will therefore they must move on to alternative goals. Express Sport takes a look at five players who could provide viable options this summer as Arteta looks for a player who can integrate with Emile Smith Rowe and occasionally operate as the team’s sole playmaker.

Without a contract in a year, Isco could be away this summer and at a bargain price unless he demonstrates the willingness to sign a new contract.

Reports have said that the 29-year-old, with 336 appearances at Real Madrid and 38 appearances in Spain, could be available for as little as £ 6 million.

Carlo Ancelotti more recently hinted that he might have a chance, greeting his “great desire, excitement and hunger” in training.

However, an offer could cause Los Blancos to part ways with long-time class striker who can also operate as a central midfielder or winger, as he clocked up just 1,092 minutes in 29 games last term for an average of just 38. minutes per aspect.

Christopher Nkunkuun

Former Paris Saint-Germain Academy talent Nkunku was watched by Unai Emery in his early days at Arsenal with the pair who had worked together in the French capital.

Since then Nkunku has spent the last two seasons with RB Leipzig having played in almost every conceivable role from center midfield, attacking midfield, right winger, left winger and center forward.

The dynamic 23-year-old Frenchman produced 12 goals and 27 assists for Leipzig and a £ 27m price tag had previously been speculated for the player.

Nkunku’s versatility makes him one of Arsenal’s most interesting options, although Leipzig have already lost several key players this summer to Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate.

Lucas Paqueta

Paqueta joined Lyon from AC Milan in the summer of 2020 but enjoyed an important first season at the club, contributing 10 goals and six assists in 34 games.

The Brazilian, valued at around 31.5 million pounds by Transfermarkt, has a contract until 2025 but Lyon’s financial problems could lead them to part ways after just 12 months.

Still just 23, Paqueta – who scored Brazil’s victory when they reached the Copa America final earlier this month – impressed in France after struggling to settle in Italy.

A quick and direct striker, Paqueta’s fights in Milan do not sum up his talents enough and he can play as number 10 in 4-2-3-1 or as a deeper midfielder in 4-3-3.

Nabil Fekir

Long tied to the Premier League, Fekir almost made it to Liverpool in 2018 and has been keenly inclined to move to the Emirates for the past two years. He is currently in Spain with Real Betis, where he has spent the last two seasons.

The former Lyon attacking midfielder, World Cup winner with France, produced 11 direct goals in 38 games last season after 14 in 33 the previous season.

The 27-year-old could be attainable given Betis finished 10th in La Liga last year, although he would probably still want to make a profit on the £ 17.7m they paid two years ago.

Fekir’s kick is not as high as it once was, but he is still a very talented striker who can play left or right, as well as in the center or as a center forward or second striker.

Christoph Baumgartner

Turning 22 on the first day of August, the Austrian international has enjoyed excellent last two seasons with Hoffenheim and even scored for his country at Euro 2020 in a 1-0 win over Ukraine.

Another versatile player, with Baumgartner capable of playing left winger, central midfield, as an advanced midfielder or as a forward or second striker, contributed nine goals and seven assists in 41 games last season.

Linked to Liverpool and Manchester United, Baumgartner spent four years in Germany but said last month: “My clear plan is to play for Hoffenheim next season. I believe I have the greatest opportunity to develop further here. For me this means playing constantly at a high level with more room for improvement ”.

This could make it difficult for Arsenal to reward him, although an offer made could sway the player’s thinking, and Hoffenheim would certainly sell for a nice profit on the nominal stake they would have paid for him at AKA St Polten in 2017.
