Richard Pusey, nicknamed “Australia’s most hated man”, was sentenced. He has become a pariah for gloatingly filmed the deaths of four Victoria officers who were killed by a truck after stopping Pusey’s speeding car.

The incident involving the 42-year-old took place last year on April 22. Two police officers stopped Pusey as he was reportedly driving his Porsche at 149 km / h on the eastern highway. Two other officers joined them on the scene. Then a truck veered into the emergency lane, fatally injuring all four policemen, but leaving Pusey unharmed.

The man’s reaction to what happened has made him one of the most outraged people in Australia. He pulled out his phone and, instead of asking for help, began filming the scene, zooming in on the victims and giving a running commentary, calling what became the biggest single loss of police life in Victoria’s history. “F ** king justice.”

At the end of March, the man pleaded guilty to four counts: contempt of public decency, possession of drugs, reckless conduct that endangers serious injury and speeding. On Wednesday, the Victoria County Court sentenced him to 10 months in prison for the first of them, which stems from his conduct during the incident. His other charges will be resolved at a later date, which means that even if his prison sentence expires within a few days, Pusey is likely to remain in custody.

The court decision has left many people unsatisfied. The husband of one of the officers called the sentence “Totally inappropriate” since “Outrageous” nature of Pusey’s behavior. Wayne Gatt of the Police Association of Victoria called the defendant a “Coward without a soul” who lives while “Four honest heroes are dead”, and that said “Judgment for people like this, it doesn’t happen in court.”

Each of us will face our own mortality someday. When his day comes, I hope he faces the same coldness and insensitivity with which he provided my members when they faced theirs.

Judge Trevor Wraight, who previously referred to Pusey as “Probably the most hated man in Australia”, he didn’t even throw punches during the sentence. He said what the defendant did was “Cruel and shameful” but he acknowledged his guilty plea and apology to the cops’ families as evidence of genuine remorse. He also pointed out that contrary to what some people believe, Pusey was not responsible for the tragic deaths.

In early April, the driver of the truck that caused the fatal accident was sentenced to 22 years. He pleaded guilty to eight counts of various crimes. The court was told that when the accident occurred, he was driving under the influence of drugs while suffering from sleep deprivation, which caused him to experience psychotic delusions. The manager of the shipping company, who allegedly pushed the driver to work in a delusional state, is currently contesting the manslaughter charges.
