Americans advise avoiding all travel to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the Maldives

WASHINGTON: The United States has advised its citizens to avoid traveling to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and the Maldives due to the sudden spate of Covid-19 cases in the region.
In a series of travel warnings on Thursday, authorities also urged Americans to reconsider travel to China and Nepal; exercise more caution when traveling to Sri Lanka and exercise normal travel precautions in Bhutan, which has been assigned Level 1, the safest level for traveling overseas.
India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives have been placed in Level 4, which means asking Americans not to travel to these countries.
“Do not travel to India due to Covid-19, crime and terrorism,” the State Department said in its latest India Travel Notice, days after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a similar warning for India.
The CDC has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Warning for India due to Covid-19, which indicates a very high level of Covid-19 in the country.
“Don’t travel to the Maldives because of Covid-19. Exercise more caution in the Maldives because of terrorism, “the State Department said in its travel advisory for the country.
“Don’t travel to Pakistan due to Covid-19. Reconsider the trip to Pakistan due to terrorism and sectarian violence. Some areas have a higher risk, “the State Department said.
Terrorist groups continue to plot attacks in Pakistan, he said.
“A local history of terrorism and continuing ideological aspirations for violence by extremist elements have led to indiscriminate attacks on civilian and local military and police targets,” the State Department said.
“Terrorists can attack with little or no warning, targeting transportation hubs, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, resorts, schools, hospitals, places of worship and government structures. Terrorists have targeted US diplomats and diplomatic structures in the past, “he said.
Terrorist attacks continue to occur across Pakistan, with the majority in Balochistan and KPK (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), including former FATA (federally administered tribal areas).
Large-scale terrorist attacks have claimed numerous casualties, the State Department said.
In its advice on Afghanistan, the State Department asked its citizens not to travel to Afghanistan due to Covid-19, crime, terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping and armed conflict.
“Don’t travel to Bangladesh due to Covid-19. Exercise more caution in Bangladesh due to crime, terrorism and kidnappings,” he said.
