Protests became deadly in India as clashes between farmers and government officials escalated dramatically. On Sunday, a car owned by a ruling party minister pushed through the crowd, in turn killing four farmers participating in year-long protests against an agricultural reform bill.
Following the incident, the Indian government suspended the internet and prevented political leaders from entering the region where the protests are occurring. Opposition party members called the events a tragedy and said the whole of India is ashamed of how far the violence has come.
“So many peasants are not among us today, they have been mowed down by a car,” said Vandana Singh, a Congress Party worker. “Today the whole country is ashamed of it. The country that praised its soldiers and peasants has today put its peasants in such bad conditions ”.
