The success of many aspects of our life depends on how we get along with those around us. However, we rarely think about what we can change about our behavior to leave a big impression on people. Here are some bad habits you need to break free to be more likeable and make people feel positive emotions when they’re around you.
1. Use negative words
Avoid negative expressions and negative words whenever possible. Research shows that when you use them in your speech, even if it’s just “no”, you and the listener release stress hormones, which ultimately affect the relationship. Therefore, it is better to get rid of the habit of starting a sentence with the word “no”.
2. Leave without saying goodbye
These people leave the office at the end of the working day or any other meeting without saying goodbye. Many perceive this behavior as a manifestation of rudeness and bad manners.
3. False smile
Smiling is a great way to win over those around you. But that doesn’t mean you have to smile all the time or force yourself to. People easily read the insincerity in the emotions of their interlocutors. Therefore, try to show sincere feelings in communicating with others.
4. Speak names incorrectly
Remembering a name is a sign that a person is interested in the other person. Research shows that we forget people’s names due to a lack of interest. And that, in turn, can make you unpleasant in the eyes of another person.
5. Ignoring someone in a group of people
Let’s say you are engaged in small talk and a new interlocutor has joined you. Often, people continue the conversation by ignoring the new person. Yes, maybe the timing isn’t right, but that doesn’t mean you should act like the person isn’t there. As Elie Wiesel wrote: “The opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference”.
6. Giving unsolicited advice
Perhaps you have experience in solving a problem that the interlocutor faced, but you should not immediately teach others how to live. Before you can help, you need to ask if people want your advice.
