How artificial intelligence is forever changing the future of cooking
There are many ways AI is making it easier to cook, get recipes, and have smart kitchen appliances in the future.
Several AI companies are working on projects that may soon change the way people cook at home. Here are three examples of AI technologies already available or on the way that can help you save time in the kitchen.
1. Even more food at your fingertips
According to a 2012 report from the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 1 billion pounds of food is thrown away every year in America because it has never been eaten.
A company called Nine Labs wants to reduce this waste with its Android app, called LeftoverSwap.
The idea is simple: people record what leftovers they have in the fridge and what they’re willing to give away. A list of people in the user area looking for leftover food is displayed so you know who will benefit from leftovers not consumed today.
The app even allows users to request specific types of food or allergies, making this a game changer for someone with dietary restrictions on what they can eat. One day soon, LeftoverSwap could help reduce the amount of perfectly good food that is thrown away each night because it hasn’t been eaten.
2 . Technology can help you plan your meals
What if the AI finds out exactly how much protein you need each day and then finds the recipes that meet those needs?
A start-up called Soylent is working on a product that could do just that.
The company, which has already had success with a product called Soylent, a “ready-to-drink” meal for those looking to save time, has funded a Kickstarter campaign to create a product called Coffiest.
This caffeinated version of the original drink was specially designed for busy professionals.
It’s full of caffeine and offers the nutritional benefits of both coffee and Soylent, but with fewer calories than either drink alone.
In addition to its new products, the company is currently working on artificial intelligence software that analyzes exactly how much protein you need each day based on your height, weight and fitness level.
3. Artificial intelligence can help you get recipes
What if the AI figured out exactly what you needed to put in your slow cooker based on the ingredients you had?
Or how about if AI could find bespoke recipes for what’s available in the grocery store down the street, making it easier than ever to follow a recipe.
A company called Ocado is already doing this.
The UK’s online grocery service provides artificial intelligence technology that finds specific recipes based on each user’s tastes, allergies and cooking style.
So if the AI knows you’re allergic to nuts, it won’t show you a nut recipe unless you tell the AI you’d like to see how other users made the replacements themselves.
Ocado has teamed up with several famous chefs including Heston Blumenthal, the “Fat Duck Cook”, a three-star Michelin restaurant in England.
The AI technology offered by Ocado is a look at how AI will play an important role in the future of cooking by finding recipes based on individual tastes, allergies and other dietary needs or restrictions.
Artificial intelligence is exploding by leaps and bounds these days. It can help you reduce food waste, plan meals, find recipes, and more.
